Jay Chou's regular lyricist Huang Jun Lang

One of the regular lyricists for Jay Chou is Huang Jun Lang, he is the writer of such songs as "Cowboy Is Very Busy" and more, a few days ago he came to Beijing with his new book. Huang Jun Lang practically never accepts interviews from the media when promoting, he doesn't take pictures either. This time his book has released a simplified Chinese version, Vincent Fang was even more impatient than him and came with him to Beijing. Jay Chou even searched for a pile of his clothes for him to wear, he warned him not embarrass himself with a homeless look while in Beijing. It's hard to blame this guy who was once kicked out by his landlord for saying: "My luck is very good, I've always got fools around me willing to help."

Reporter: Which one do you like more, writing books or lyrics?

Huang Jun Lang: You make a lot of money writing lyrics, but when compared to writing books, I don't like it as much. Plus, if you've written some lyrics and even if people like listening to it, it might be because Jay's melody is written well, or maybe it's because the song is the main plugged one. But actually I think the real good lyrics are overlooked, for example the lyrics I wrote for Nan Quan Mama, perhaps because they are small comparatively, there are less people who know it. When you write books you don't get this feeling, if someone thinks this book is great, it's basically all my credit.

Reporter: I hear that before you started writing lyrics, you were once living in poverty?

Huang Jun Lang: After I graduated I didn't find a job, I felt it was great just drawing like this everyday. Back then I was so poor I didn't have money for food or paying rent, one day the landlord threw all my stuff out the door and changed the locks. It was raining on that day, I felt very sullen, but I also felt living this way was very cool.

Actually when I didn't have any money I went to the coffee shop. First I would order a drink and sit for the afternoon just drawing, when I've been drawing till night time I would go up to the manager and say: "I don't have any money, can I use my drawings to trade for a meal?" The result was successful. I'm lucky like this, there's always fools around me willing to help, including Jay and Vincent.

Reporter: How are Jay Chou and Vincent Fang "fools"?

Huang Jun Lang: I'm actually a very lazy person, I think it's fine just to sleep all day everyday, I don't want to become famous at all. But Jay and Vincent would say, you should promote your book. Vincent came especially with me to Beijing this time, usually when taking interviews both of them would especially take my book with them. The clothes I'm wearing today are Jay's. When he heard I was going to Mainland China, he said to me: "Don't embarrass me!" Thus he found a few bits of clothing in his wardrobe and even helped me match them. Usually they often say, "Why don't I buy a car for you to drive", or "Why don't I buy a house for you to live in". I'm thinking, I don't go out very often, if I agreed I would be helping them look after the cars, haha.

Reporter: Being a friend, how do you see Jay Chou's music production?

Huang Jun Lang: Early on no matter which country Jay went to, the first thing he would do was find records from that place to listen to different styles of music. When I hadn't started writing lyrics yet, I went to Japan with him once,. On that day until morning, we ran to a place that sold records in Japan, we listened. Afterwards, before he released "Capricorn", I had a brainstorm and text messaged him - actually I don't do these things very often, I think it's disgusting when men text each other - I said with a serious tone, the you in the past continuously absorbed information, but you've been so busy these last few years, you don't have time to recharge anymore.

Afterwards I saw a note he left for me on my desk in the company: "Ah Lang, I'm actually very moved by what you said, but don't forget, I'm really diao." He's still very confident, he's actually telling me, he understands what I said, but I don't have to worry about him, he might be very serious when I can't see him, it might be when he's on a plane, having a shower, he's spending even more time on music.
